Quotes from Early Childhood Prefessionals

"Parents don't make mistakes because they don't care, but because they care so deeply."
-T. Berry Brazelton

This quote is perfect for his work with parents and newborns. His research on how parent's behaviors affect children really comes out in this quote because you can tell that he cares not only for the children but trying to help the parents and educate them as well as the children.

"Children benefit most from teachers who have skills, knowledge, and judgment to make good decisions and are given the opportunity to use them." NAEYC, Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Programs Serving Children from Birth through Age 8 (2009).

This quote is from the book that Sue Bredekamp wrote for NAEYC. These guidelines are used in schools all over the nation who are accredited or are wanting to be accredited by NAEYC. They are the standards that are set to help further educate the children as well as the teachers.

"But as I grew up, I think I wanted to be-continue to be a teacher because I had just a built-in passion that was important to make a real contribution in the world and to fix all the injustices that existed in the world, and I wanted to do that through teaching."
-Louise Derman-Sparks

I chose this quote from the multimedia presentation because her passion for teaching and children just screams from the page. Educators underestimate how much of an impact they have on these young lives. Some teachers are the only consistent thing in these children's lives and if they can not only teach and educate the curriculum but life lessons as well, that is the mentor that they need and crave to look up too.

  1. Tia, I adore that quote from T. Berry Brazelton! I am going to use that in my work, consulting with early childhood programs :-) One of my missions is to rid the early childhood field of the "parents don't care" sentiment. I hear it often, unfortunately, and though I understand first-hand the frustration early care teachers feel about the lack of connection they feel with families, I don't think it's fair to make the assumption that parents don't care about their children. This is the perfect quote to address that, thanks!

  2. I also love Brazelton's quote. I think even the parents who seem not to care at all because they're not involved in problematic issues care deeply, and often have a hard time confronting challenging behavior or a developmental issue is because of it. We currently have a child in our care who has significant speech delays but is not enrolled in early intervention services, despite it being free and our efforts to reach out to his parents. I think this is largely because his mother cares so much that facing his speech delay issues would be devastating. Brazelton's quote is a good quote which reflects this tendency in parents to make mistakes because they care so much, despite it appearing to the contrary.

  3. NAEYC's, Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Programs - Serving Children from Birth through Age 8, is one of my favorite resources for being an ECE teacher. I stumbled upon this resource the first year od being in the ECE program at Broome Community College. I couldn't agree more with the quote you chose. I feel that it is very important for teacher to have skills, knowledge, and good judgment in order to make good decisions. This is the only way children will benefit and get the most out of their learning experience.

  4. hi tia
I have to agree with Brooke. The quote from T.Berry Brazelton is really good. My mom often says to me that I wasn't the perfect mom but I tried my best. I must say in my eyes she was perfect because she showed me unconditional love. My house was filled with happiness and a place I knew no matter what I would be safe. Great quote!
